Math Teacher Position

The Leelanau School is seeking a HIGH SCHOOL MATHEMATICS TEACHER who can work collaboratively in our independent environment while adhering to the high expectations of the program. The Leelanau School is a refreshing environment for educators who recognize the benefit of smaller class sizes, and are seeking greater professional freedom from standardization and compliance based instruction. Candidates must be creative lesson designers, enthusiastic about inquiry-based instruction and learning, responsive to the needs of individual learners, and maintain a caring atmosphere by building positive relationships with students and families.

Teaching at Leelanau:

  • The Leelanau School is a 9th-12th grade fully independent co-ed boarding and day school.
  • The Leelanau School was founded in 1929 on the principles of small class sizes, broad and enriching curriculum, and experiential learning. 
  • All students are supported by a Learning Skills program, integrating course work and developing effective executive functioning skills for the lifelong benefit of the students. 
  • Faculty and students make frequent use of our Lake Michigan shoreline, wooded campus, and involvement in nature as a core component of teaching and learning. 
  • In addition to planning and delivering daily instruction and assessment, Leelanau teachers engage with students for the benefit of their positive social-emotional development.

Requirements:

  • Respect for learners and a passion for their social, emotional, and intellectual development.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Education or education related field.
  • Practiced in a variety of instructional strategies to develop courageous problem solvers and critical thinkers. 
  • Enthusiasm for invention of projects that allow students to apply mathematics in context of design, engineering, art or other problem solving pathways.
  • Comfort in developing curriculum, designing lesson plans, and inventing authentic assessments. 
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with other faculty to develop curriculum, deliver instruction, support individual students, and advance programming.
  • Willingness to engage in the school community beyond the classroom, and periodically chaperone student activities.
  • Excellence in communication (verbal and written; formal and informal).
  • Respect for parenting and inherent partnership between school and home.
  • Additional instructional expertise in other fields of interest is desirable. 
  • Successful clearance of FBI background checks.
